EARTHQUAKE RESISTANT
WARM IN WINTER AND COOL IN SUMMER
At a time when the country and the world is having serious concerns about the environment, the climate is the overriding concern, and we can know that our houses will have to be considered for changes pretty soon because of the way they affect the atmosphere. What we have to do for the climate is cut down the amount of invisible CO2 (carbon) we put in the air. We can do this by:
-
Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels (gas, oil, coal, as well as wood)
-
Getting our energy from renewable resources such as solar energy, wind energy, or water power
Even though we are told that the temperature of the planet has risen 1.5C degrees, what is actually happening is we are getting higher highs and lower lows, so this will require more heating and cooling in our homes. This is at least 26% of a country’s energy usage, and energy is usually created by burning gas or oil.
If we have an older house, we have to find a way to make it suitable for the climate conditions. It is found to be better if we make renovations to it than if we tear it down and rebuild a traditional house. Rebuilding is very expensive. We would be using lumber, and in the process we actually would create a lot of invisible air pollution.
What Condition Do Our Homes Need To Be In?
While a carbon housing upgrade renovation would be different for each home, most retrofits will need to focus on four main areas:
Airtightness and Insulation – windows, doors, drafty areas, attic
Appliances and Lighting – energy-efficient refrigerator, LED lights
HVAC systems – replacing heating, cooling and ventilation
Renewable energy – installing a solar system, wind turbine or hybrid
Financing
There are a variety of financing, leasing and community options for carbon upgrades that you can get. Often rebates or incentives from utility companies can often help with thousands of dollars.
Why Not Consider These Alternatives?
While it is very expensive to rebuild a house, or even renovate, there are alternatives now that are designed specifically for the climate change conditions.
Some of them are very inexpensive. We present one here, designed in Sweden and Canada, and manufactured in China. It is an arched home available in various sizes that we have been making available for ten years.
